Types of Dashboards: The Operational Dashboard

What are Operational Dashboards?

Operational dashboards focus on performance monitoring and measuring - important metrics for any user. This is why they can be found in all departments, but are most common in departments where it's essential to act on critical information quickly (i.e. sales, marketing, etc.).

They contain a set of well-defined business metrics (KPIs and KRIs), updated in real-time, that allow every employee to closely monitor the efficiency and effectiveness of their operations.

These dashboards are typically easier to deploy than an analytical dashboard, as they require less data to create and less training to use.

Why are Operational Dashboards Useful?

It's important to track your progress, and even more so, to be notified of issues as they happen in order to resolve them easily and quickly. Operational dashboards alert you to deviations in data, allowing you to easily track your progress, resolve issues, and even take notice of opportunities. Certain jobs, like those you may find in sales, rely on knowing where their targets and performance levels lie. Operational dashboards make this important data both easier to use and easier to understand.

Beyond being an easy solution for your daily data needs, operational dashboards, when used properly, are known to be able to provide a host of performance benefits, such as:
  • Better focus and alignment
  • Operational dashboards provide your daily data needs in a conveniently wrapped, visible package. By having the information crucial to your job's success front and center at all times, you will improve your focus and alignment.
  • Faster decision making
  • By being able to quickly see your data, you can just as quickly make decisions based on it. Not having to dig through pages of data to get at those numbers you need, will make your job (and life) that much easier.
  • Performance autonomy
  • When both manager and employee can monitor performance and targets from a dashboard, any need for micromanaging is eliminated. This way, employees don't feel like every move is monitored (allowing for a happier work environment), and managers have that valuable time freed up to do other work (saving resources). It's a win-win.
