Add a period over period comparison
This walkthrough shows you how to add a period over period (or date offset) comparison to your dashboard.
Period over period lets you compare measure values for one period of time against the results from a previous or subsequent period of time.

2.1. Create a new dashboard with a metric set
From the main menu, click New, click Dashboard, and then select the Blank template.
Go to the EXPLORE panel, expand the Metric Sets folder, and drag an existing metric set (e.g. MetricSet1) to the dashboard canvas.
The metric set is displayed as a bar chart which shows OrderQty by OrderDate.
2.2. Add a member range filter
Select the bar chart, go to the toolbar, click Filter, and then click Member Range. In the Filter Visualizations dialog, set the default range of the filter. Since this example is using Adventure Works 2014, set the range to start and end at 2013.
2.3. Change the hierarchy level of the metric set
Next, right-click the bar chart on the dashboard. From the context menu, select Data Analysis Panel.
In the Data Analysis Panel, click the Edit icon of the OrderDate hierarchy in the ROWS field.
This opens the Configure Metric Set Element dialog. At the bottom of the dialog, use the Level dropdown to change the hierarchy level from 'Year' to 'Month'.
The bar chart is updated to show month members along the X axis.
2.4. Add a period over period measure
With the bar char selected, go to the toolbar, click Data Tools, and then click Add Period Over Period.
The Period Over Period Comparison dialog is displayed. In the dialog, select the checkbox option Automatically Add Parameter Control. This will add a set of controls to allow you to change the period over period settings dynamically while in View mode.
The bar chart is updated to display a second series corresponding to the previous year's data (in this example, 2012).
A set of controls is also added to the dashboard to allow users to change the period over period settings while in View mode.
Go to the toolbar and click View. Use the period over period controls on the dashboard to:
- Change the direction of offset from Backward to Forward. Default is Backwards.
- Change the number of time periods to offset. Default is 1.
- Change the size of each time period. Default is Year.
Switch back to Edit mode and open the Data Analysis Panel for the chart. You'll see a second measure named OrderQty Pop-1Year which represents the period over period series.
3. Returning all comparison data
By default, a period over period measure (e.g., OrderQty PoP-1Year) only returns values for dates where there are corresponding values for the input measure (for example, OrderQty). However, there may be situations where you want to see all of the period over period measure values, regardless of whether there is anything to compare against. For example, you may want to see the period over period values extended into the future in order to determine sales goals.
As an example, consider the same bar chart visualization of OrderQty and OrderQty PoP-1Year measures, however without the member filter applied.
To have this chart show all of the period over period values, open the Data Analysis Panel and edit the OrderQty PoP-1Year measure.
In the Configure Metric Set Element dialog, select the Return All Parallel Period Comparison Data checkbox and click Submit.
The chart now displays all of the period over period values, which includes dates where there are no OrderQty values.
