Dundas BI Azure Application Deployment Guide

Important
The Dundas BI Azure Virtual Machine is now available in the Azure market place: http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/marketplace/partners/dundas/dundas-bi/

This article details the steps to take after deploying Dundas BI virtual machine from the Microsoft Azure Marketplace. Also, this article contains recommended actions, and migration options.

1. After virtual machine is started

1.1. Set up your Azure Instance

On first login after provisioning the Dundas BI application from the Microsoft Azure Marketplace the Dundas BI Azure setup application will automatically run. The application will pop-up and automatically look for the latest Dundas BI Application files.

Fill in the following information:

  • Admin username: The username for the built-in administrator for the Dundas BI instance.
  • Email Address: The email address for the built-in administrator for the Dundas BI instance.
  • Password: The password for the built-in administrator for the Dundas BI instance.
  • Internal URL: The URL used internally to connect to the application (e.g. for automated dashboard export) .
  • External URL: The url for regular users of the application.

After the information is entered click the Set up Azure instance button.

The Dundas BI Azure setup application will do the following:

  1. Download the latest version information
  2. Remove the old set up files
  3. Install the latest Dundas BI set up files
  4. Initialize the admin account
  5. Set Dundas BI Properties
  6. Upgrades the Dundas BI Azure Instance

After all tasks have finished, a summary will appear. A link

Important
The Dundas BI URL that appears, will launch a browser when clicked. The finish button should be clicked before interacting with that browser window. The finish button will finishing loading Windows and required services.

Important
Once the Dundas BI Azure is run to success one time, the Dundas BI Azure setup application will automatically close.

2.1. Switching to SSL

It is strongly recommended to use SSL with the Dundas BI instance. In order to do this, you will need to do the following:

1.  Log in to the Dundas BI virtual machine.

2.  Open the IIS Manager. For more information on how to open the IIS manager, see the following article: Open IIS Manager (IIS 8).

3.  Select the Azure Site and then click Bindings.

4.  Click the Add button on the site bindings.

Click the <strong>Add</strong> binding button.
Click the Add binding button.

5.  Change the type to https, the port should switch to 443. Next select the SSL certificate. In this example we use a self-signed certificate for the virtual machine. It is recommended to get a SSL certificate that has been signed by a Certificate Authority (CA).

Important
If you use a self-signed certificate, clients will get a warning when visiting the Dundas BI site. This warning will state that the sites certificate is not trusted.

3. Migration

3.1. Migrating to Microsoft SQL Azure

3.1.1. Migrate the databases

The Dundas BI application database and warehouse database can be migrated to Microsoft SQL Azure. This can accomplished by using the Dundas BI Deployment application.

Important
When using Microsoft SQL Azure for the Dundas BI Application Database and/or Warehouse Database, it must be v12 or higher.

To open the Dundas BI deployment application simply do the following:

  1. Log in to the Dundas BI virtual machine.
  2. Click the Windows button on the keyboard.
  3. Type "Dundas BI Deployment"
  4. Click the Dundas BI Deployment {version} application.

Tip
The Dundas BI Deployment application is running in a special mode for Azure. To toggle this mode on or off, modify the IsAzureMode registry value to "ON" OR "OFF" for the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Dundas Data Visualization Inc\Dundas\BI\Setup.

With the Dundas BI Deployment application now open, do the following:

1.  Click the migrate databases to Microsoft SQL Azure option in the menu.

2.  Select the Azure instance and then click Next.

3.  Enter the Microsoft SQL Azure Connection details, and click the Next button.

4.  Review the details, and click the Finish button.

5.  Wait for the tasks to complete. The import and export bacpac files tasks will take some time to complete.

6.  The tasks summary screen appears. Click the finish button to complete the process

3.1.2. Update the scheduler connection string

In order for the scheduler to function correctly its connection string needs to be updated. To do this edit the config file located: C:\Program Files\Dundas Data Visualization Inc\Dundas BI\Instances\Azure\services\scheduler\Dundas.BI.Scheduler.exe.config. Change the connection string to point to the Dundas BI application database on SQL Azure. After this restart the scheduler service.

A copy of the new connection string will exist in the C:\Program Files\Dundas Data Visualization Inc\Dundas BI\Instances\Azure\www\BIWebsite\dundasBIConnection.config file

3.2. Upgrading the instance

To upgrade the Dundas BI instance with a new version on a Microsoft Azure Virtual machine do the following:

  1. Log in to the Dundas BI virtual machine.
  2. Download the latest version of Dundas BI from My Account - Downloads.
  3. Follow the same procedure outlined here: Upgrade an instance.
