Setting Up Data Input

Contents[Hide]

1. Overview

Data Input lets you reference a warehouse data storage area containing user input data, and add or modify data from inside Dundas BI. This article shows you how to set up a simple data input table from the Metric Set designer and one of the view designers.

Since the data source is the user and the data is stored in the Dundas BI warehouse, you do not require a data connector for this functionality. Other than the lack of an explicit data connector, Data Input follows the usual Dundas BI Data Model that relies on data cubes and metric sets to display data on dashboards, reports, and scorecards.

You have three ways to set up data input:

  1. Create a data cube with a Data Input transform. You can then use the data cube to create metric sets on the Metric Set designer or one of the view designers (Dashboard, Report, or Scorecard).
  2. Use the Metric Set designer to auto-generate a data cube with a Data Input transform. You can then use the metric set on one of the view designers.
  3. Use one of the view designers to auto-generate a metric set, which in turn auto-generates a data cube with a Data Input transform.

2. Setting up Data Input on the Metric Set designer

On a new metric set, click Enter New Data.

Click Enter New Data on the Metric Set Designer

The Data Preview panel automatically expands to show the Data Input Column dialog. Provide a Column Name and select the Column Data Type, and then click Submit.

Complete the Data Input Column dialog and click submit

Note
If you indicate a Default Value, that value will be automatically populated in that column for each new row.

The Data Input Column dialog is replaced with a single-column table on the Data Preview panel. Type data into the text field to input data.

Right-click a cell to insert a row or create a new column.

Insert rows and create columns using the context menu

Like any other metric set, you can now Re-Visualize and customize this metric set.

3. Setting up Data Input on the Dashboard designer

On a dashboard, add a new data visualization from the toolbar (for example, a Bar chart).

Open the Data Preview panel and click enter new data.

Similar to the Metric Set designer, the Data Preview panel automatically expands to show the Data Input Column dialog. Provide a Column Name and select the Column Data Type, and then click Submit.

4. Modify input data

Whether you are on the Metric Set designer or one of the view designers, you may want to change the input data after the initial set up. To modify input data, select the visualization (unless you are on the Metric Set designer), open the Data Preview panel, and click Modify Data.

5. Notes

  • Deleting a column from the Data Input is postponed until after you check in. This means you will be unable to create a column with the same title as the deleted one until you check in and check out.
