Leaving Reports Behind With Dashboards
This week we hosted a webinar where one of our Dundas Solutions Architects sat down to discuss the benefits of using a dashboard and the business challenges of having to relying on a report all the time. By explaining some of the key differences between dashboards and reports, as well as showing real-world examples of where we believe a dashboard could have been used, our SA Ricky made a compelling case for the inclusion of dashboards in any organization.
The webinar addressed who you are and any common challenges you may be facing at work. The typical differences of dashboards and reports were explored and a strong case was made for where a dashboard can come into play using real-world examples from the transportation, sales & marketing and education sectors.
Generally, reports are primarily text and table based with some visual components. They are lengthy and can span multiple pages, and present static information that’s published on a schedule. Reports are comprised of background data, and can help you when you need information for a decision.
Dashboards however, are primarily visual with a few text and table components. They are contained on a single screen, are interactive, and allow for at-a-glance monitoring, They are available on a persistent basis, and the fact that they are targeted squarely on your KPIs makes them a decision-driving information hub.
The main takeaway of this presentation was that dashboards can improve the functionality of reports since they are easy to read and designed for decision making instead of decision informing.
