When you put dashboards and reports side by side, you will have people defending both, trying to single out a clear winner.

But, should organizations really choose one or the other?

Reports


Display data in a textual format, often in a spreadsheet, and allow users to view any set of data collected from any department on any event.



Dashboards


Display their data in a visual format, usually through graphs or other visualization objects, and provide ongoing, real-time visualizations for a specific set of data points.



Placing the data most important and relevant to your work front and center is necessary for day-to-day tasks as well as longer-term priorities. However, it does not eliminate the need to run queries on data for other ad-hoc or one-off requests. For these requests, reports make sense.

So, if you still need the report, why bother with the dashboard?



You can save a significant amount of time and resources by using dashboards to take care of an employee's daily data needs, and using reports to provide insight into events that, while vital, aren't needed everyday. Using both tools allows for greater efficiency, and all without compromising the spread and availability of information.
